Empowering Youth in Climate Action and Strategies for Ecosystem Restoration

In the Faith Pavilion opening keynote, Sean Clarke, Editor and Spiritual Research Lead at the Spiritual Science Research Foundation, noted that 2024 is on track to become the hottest year in recorded history, bringing the world closer to exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. He highlighted the continuous rise in greenhouse gas concentrations, calling for an urgent reevaluation of climate strategies. Clarke emphasized the importance of allocating a portion of climate finance to educate communities on positive practices that contribute to restoring environmental balance and stabilizing the climate.

Baku Declaration

Under the patronage of President Ilham Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Caucasus Muslims' Board (CMB), in collaboration with the Muslim Council of Elders, the COP29 Presidency, and Azerbaijan's State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is organizing the Global Summit of the Religious Leaders for Climate in Baku. Protecting our Common Climate System, an interfaith appeal to COP 29

The World Federalist Movement-Institute for Global Policy (WFM-IGP) will present an interfaith climate appeal today at COP29's Faith Pavilion in Baku, calling for stronger global environmental governance. The appeal, "Protecting Our Common Climate System: Earth Governance for a Sustainable Future," outlines key proposals rooted in shared religious and philosophical principles.

These include declaring a UN Planetary Emergency, appointing a UN Special Envoy for Future Generations, and negotiating a Fossil Fuel Treaty to phase out fossil fuel extraction. The petition also supports expanding environmental justice mechanisms, including the current International Court of Justice climate case and adding ecocide as a crime under international law. The pledge was endorsed by EcoJesuits and over 400 religious, faith and values-based individuals and organisations from around the world.

A Sacred Call for Climate Justice

Each year, thousands gather at the United Nations climate conference to seek urgent solutions for our planet’s most pressing issues. At COP29 in Baku, the World Council of Churches is taking a stand for climate justice, uniting faith-based voices to advocate for vulnerable communities across Asia, the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America.

Driven by faith, the World Council of Churches calls upon us to be stewards of creation, defending biodiversity and amplifying the voices of those often left unheard—women, children, Indigenous peoples, and persons with disabilities. Together, we demand urgent climate action to protect all of God’s creation.

We stand at a crossroads, facing an existential threat to life on Earth as we know it. The urgency to act cannot be overstated. As people of faith from diverse traditions, we believe the climate emergency must be addressed on a moral level, with decisions driven by honesty, compassion, courage, trust, and foresight. The survival of our planet and future generations depends on the choices made today.

The protection of our common home, Mother Earth, cannot wait. We need to take action now to confront and remedy the interconnected crises of climate breakdown, biodiversity loss, and land degradation.

Interfaith Liaison Committee COP29 Talanoa

ILC COP29 Talanoa

The Interfaith Liaison Committee (ILC) to the UNFCCC, shares an invitation to attend a virtual COP29 Talanoa Dialogue tomorrow, November 6th, 2024 from 14:30-16:00 CET. You are invited to register for the event here.

Talanoa dialogues are Fijian indigenous peoples' way of solving problems in their communities. Participants are led to address the following questions: Where are we?, Where do we want to go?, How do we get there?

ILC has held these gatherings at the start of many prior COPs. This year's Talanoa Dialogue aims to provide a nourishing and hopeful space for climate justice advocates before the opening of proceedings in Baku. It also aspires to be a space of holistic reflection, building strength and resilience in the face of the climate crisis.

You can learn more about the ILC here and sign on to their COP29 Interfaith Call to Action. For those who will be in Baku, an in-person Interfaith gathering will be held at the COP29 faith pavilion on November 12, 2024.
