In her recent political guidelines for 2024-2029, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promises the appointment of a Commissioner whose mandate will include ensuring intergenerational equity, thereby affirming the EU’s commitment to future generations.

Following this significant step, the members of the Future Generations Initiative drafted a Mission Letter presenting what we believe should be the role and missions of the Executive Vice-President for Future Generations.

What would be the role of the Executive Vice-President?

The role focuses on the long-term objectives of the EU that require cooperation between the EU institutions, the Member States and other relevant stakeholders. The role’s main mission is to harmonise efforts for intergenerational justice and to establish constructive cooperation across multiple political cycles between actors with different competencies and mandates.

The nine-points mission letter also sets out the main responsibilities of the Executive Vice-President, covering a wide range of actions. The first step is developing the legal status of Future Generations based on the existing foundations in TEU Art 3. This new role has to ensure that strategic foresight becomes a central element of the Commission’s planning and impact assessment process. Citizens’ participation has to be elevated to become a cornerstone of strategic planning in order to ensure the long-term political viability of transformative decisions.

In the run-up to crucial events for future generations such as the UN Summit of the Future, where world leaders will meet to appoint a special envoy for future generations and will have to negotiate and sign the Pact for the Future, it is imperative that the European Union follows suit and takes important decisions in line with this approach.

Today we sent our Mission Letter to the President of the European Commission as our proposed contribution to setting up the next college of commissioners. The mission letter was drafted by members of the Future Generations Initiative, and our call to President von der Leyen is supported by many Civil Society Organizations who co-signed our letter.
