Faiths for a Fossil-Fuel Non Proliferation Treaty – GreenFaith

Date: December 02, 2023

Time: 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm GST

This session will introduce the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty and its three pillars: an immediate end to new fossil fuel projects, an equitable phaseout of existing production, and commitments by historic polluters to a just transition.

After almost three decades of negotiations, world leaders are failing to deliver the action needed. Many governments avoid even using the words “fossil fuels”, let alone creating a global plan to equitably phase out fossil fuel production. Both the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the IPCC clearly state that there is no room left for new fossil fuels if we are to meet the 1.5ºC climate goal.

Our goals at COP28 are not only to amplify the conversation around the need for a rapid, and just phase out of fossil fuels, but also how to do it. Momentum is building behind the Fossil Fuel Treaty proposal, now spearheaded by a growing bloc of 8 nation-states – Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Tonga, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Niue, Antigua and Barbuda, and Timor-Leste – who will call on other governments to join them in seeking a negotiating mandate for a Treaty.
