Germany: Church makes binding commitment to protect the climate; The bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oldenburg, Thomas Adomeit, has announced a more substantial commitment of his church to climate protection. He said a climate protection law is currently being drafted and may be adopted by the synod as early as May. Read more
Climate Change Impacts on Human Rights: Climate change threatens the future of human rights and risk undoing the last fifty years of progress in development, global health and poverty reduction. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Human Rights Council (Resolution 41/21) highlighted that climate change has an impact on, among others, the rights to life, self-determination, development, health, food, water and sanitation, adequate housing and a range of civil and political rights. Along with other international organisations and experts, the UN is therefore calling for the global recognition of the right a healthy, sustainable and safe environment as a universal right. Religious network condemns slaying of Honduran rights activist: Mexico City – An ecumenical coalition of religious representatives and laypeople has condemned the murder of an Indigenous leader in Honduras and called for a thorough investigation of the death. The Churches and Mining Network said in a statement that Pablo Isabel Hernández, a leader of the indigenous Lenca people in western Honduras, was shot “in the back while he was on his way to church, where he as an active pastoral agent.” Read the story
