February’s special book club meet up will kick off our new Climate Action Network for civil society and faith leaders. This is our CIC’s modest attempt to do something positive and collaborative as part of what we should all be doing #COP26. It is funded by the National Lottery’s excellent ‘Together for Our Planet’ grants programme.

We will be in discussion with environmental compaigners and author Rupert Read first; and then. from 15.30 onwards move onto to learn more about what faith & community leaders and social enterpreneurs are doing across the country to tackle climate action in their communities, including:

  • Ghazala Tehseen from Period Poverty Project, based in Greater Manchester, Ghazela will explain how she promotes the use of reusable period products; and how they aim to destigmatise menstruation and other women’s health topics in the Muslim community.
  • Mustafa Field OBE, who heads up Faiths Forum London & Strengthening Faith Institutions, will outline the climate action being initiated across diverse faith communities, highlighting successes and achievement.
  • Azad Mohammed from Saabat Gallery CIC in Southbank, Redcar – he is is leading on a community garden project and campaigning for creative neighbourhood renewal and regeneration.
  • Kathy Heather, founder of Love North Southwark CIC and John Kabuye from Ubuntu MultiCultural Centre CIC in Middlesbrough – both talking about their eco-food shops, food recycling and innovative food pantry.

About ‘Deep Adaptation’

‘Deep adaptation’ refers to the personal and collective changes that might help us to prepare for – and live with – a climate-influenced breakdown or collapse of our societies. It is a framework for responding to the terrifying realization of increasing disruption by committing ourselves to reducing suffering while saving more of society and the natural world.

This is the first book to show how professionals across different sectors are beginning to incorporate the acceptance of likely or unfolding societal breakdown into their work and lives. They do not assume that our current economic, social and political systems can be made resilient in the face of climate change but, instead, they demonstrate the caring and creative ways that people are responding to the most difficult realization with which humanity may ever have to come to terms.

The book is edited by the originator of the concept of deep adaptation, Jem Bendell, and a leading climate activist, Philosophy Professor and strategist, Rupert Read, this book is the essential introduction to the concept, practice and emerging global movement of Deep Adaptation to climate chaos.

The Climate Action Network launch and online book club meeting will be facilitated by our founder Director Mark Ereira-Guyer & Kate Shurety, the former Executive Director (and now Associate) of the Campaign to End Loneliness. There will be a short Q&A with Rupert, before we open up the conversation to all participants.

After a break at 15.15, we’ll then hear from those listed above.

Deep adaptation book cover

This little book club aims to celebrate what is happening through civil society and faith networks, encouraging people to share and learn, and to find out the latest thinking, ideas and research – and vitally, boost connections both at an organisational level (for civil society workers, faith leaders, volunteers and Trustees) and also for those people their organisation serves.

In enabling the sharing of learning and experiences we want to generate a greater sense of social solidarity, fraternity and togetherness.

MORE ABOUT US & THE BOOK CLUB FOR WELLBEING & CONNECTION

Our community interest company is dedicated to community and social cohesion building, alongside research, capacity building and community storytelling. We plan for up to 20-30 people to participate in each book club webinar (we want to keep it small and intimate).

This project builds on current activity designed to help people and communities in the worse hit Covid areas: https://civilsocietyconsulting.co.uk/our-work-in-action/steps-to-recovery-support-for-community-champions/
